    Spring Flowers and Body Art

    Spring Flowers and Body Art

You may be wondering what spring flowers have to do with body art, but over here at Earth Henna, we wait for spring more than most. Why? Because although we love the cool, brisk air of winter (I'd say something about those twinkly snowflakes, but we're out here in Los Angeles), and getting to wear heavy sweaters and boots, the truth of the matter is that it's when things start warming up that people begin thinking about showing some skin, and by extension, body adornment!

It's not like no one cares about body art and temporary tattoos during winter--they do. We stay pretty busy around here during the winter months. But you don't have to be a psychic to know that once people start peeling off the layers, once the air warms up, and the days get longer, that's when folks seriously start imagining what henna designs or jagua designs or white henna and silver henna designs they might want to show off.

I know all the girls in the office start talking about floral vines curling up around their arms and legs (like the one featured on our Earth Henna Classic Kit). So pretty!

They also start thinking about festival season, what they'll be wearing, and how they'll be adorning their bodies. For this reason, we created the Festival Beauty Bundle, which comes with our Earth Henna Premium Kit, along with RoyalTats' groovy hair tattoos--flash tattoos that adorn your hair!

So if the spring equinox got you thinking about the longer, sunnier days to come; and about walks in nature, surrounded by gorgeous flowers, we're with you. (In Los Angeles right now, we are blessed with the magical and intoxicating scent of jasmines blooming everywhere!) That's why we got inspired to have our Spring Has Sprung Sale! Use Code: Spring 15. From now through March 28th, we're offering 15% off sitewide, along with Free Shipping over $30.

    Happy Spring!

Gold Lace, Gold Henna, or Gold Glitter Henna?

Gold Lace, Gold Henna, or Gold Glitter Henna?

We are very proud and excited to announce that our loyal customer, Urban Outfitters, has introduced our White Lace*Gold Lace Temporary Tattoo Kit in their stores and on their website this March. This kit is exclusive to Urban Outfitters!

When we started working on this product, we weren’t sure what to call it. “White Henna” had become all the rage online, and we were getting requests for it—except that there’s no such thing as white henna. The henna plant dyes the skin a deep reddish brown color—that’s been the case for thousands of years.

What people were talking about is body art that look just like henna tattoos, created with a mix of white body/face paint and medical grade adhesive. The mix goes into the same type of applicator bottle used for creating henna tattoos—a soft, ½ oz plastic bottle with a fine tip—and is released onto the skin when the bottle is squeezed.

Since the demand for a do-it-yourself kit was so high, we decided to create one for people who did not want to go through the hassle of figuring out how much of each ingredient it takes to get the right flow. Getting that right was a process! It took several more months to get the rest of the kit together, along with the package design, and a host of other considerations that come into play when coming up with a new product.

Once we knew we had something good, I showed to our contact at Urban Outfitters, who loved it, and asked if we could create a “gold henna tattoo” look. We could have simply mixed gold paint with the glue, but, as you may have noticed, glitter’s a thing! So our kit allows customers who want gold henna tattoos to simply use gold glitter to set the design, as opposed to cornstarch, which is used to set the white henna designs.

Next came the conundrum of what to call the product. We didn’t want to call it “White Henna” since that was causing confusion. The product doesn’t stain the skin white. It sits on top of the skin, dries within five minutes, and lasts 1-5 days. It does have a texture, but that goes unnoticed. It’s a temporary tattoo that is totally comfortable, and certainly a lot less noticeable to the wearer than jewelry! But it is most certainly not a henna tattoo.

So we came up with White Lace Tattoos, because the designs created with the product, when used on the hands, look a lot like a white lace glove! Since Urban Outfitter’s kit would be offering both white and gold temporary tattoos, we started calling those Gold Lace tattoos. Seeing that the White Lace*Gold Lace kit is exclusive to Urban Outfitters, we created a kit for our other customers, which offers White Lace*Silver Lace tattoos. But, the glitter is still a factor!

So, although our two new kits’ names are White Lace*Silver Lace and White Lace*Gold Lace, when talking amongst ourselves in the office, we call the shimmery tattoos gold glitter tattoos, gold henna tattoos, henna glitter tattoos, silver glitter tattoos, silver henna tattoos, and on and on. To us, they’re all a bunch of affectionate nicknames. Who knows which one will stick. Which do you prefer?

It's Official: Festival Season Is Here

It's Official: Festival Season Is Here

SXSW is already over and Coachella (4/14/17) and New Orleans Jazz Fest (4/28/17) are just around the corner. Oh my! What are you gonna do? What are you gonna wear? What will your body art look like? We think about these things, here at Earth Henna, because, of course, we've got the goods for people who want to stand out and sizzle at this year's music festivals.

If you want to have the best designs, we can hook you up with our fabulous line of stencils. Choose your design, cut it off the stencil sheet, apply eucalyptus oil to your skin, place the stencil face down and hold it there for 30 seconds. Lift it off, and presto! The marking is now there for you to easily trace over with your henna or jagua. Check out the stencil we chose from the Earth Henna Premium Temporary Tattoo Kit and how the design came out.

Not bad, eh? Especially for someone who can't draw, like me.

Since people also like to create their own designs, our White Lace/Silver Lace kit (aka White Henna/Silver Henna), comes with a sheet of patterns to give you ideas, like these:

And then, of course, for those of you who want to go completely spectacular (and speak the truth to power, while you're at it--like me!), we can also hook you up with artists in your city (if we know someone there), who can use your kit to create really elaborate designs like this fantastic silver henna temporary tattoo!

In case you hadn't figured it out yet, at Earth Henna, if your goal is to look beautiful and sport the most gorgeous body art in the world, we're here to serve you! Plus, at the moment, if you spend $30 or more, you get FREE SHIPPING! It's time to get your festival groove on, ladies.

What We Care About: You Looking Gorgeous, And Other things

What We Care About: You Looking Gorgeous, And Other things

If Body Adornment was a person, her goal in life would be:

    • Make human beings gorgeous
    • Help people express themselves
    • Give people options

At Earth Henna, in creating henna tattoo kits, jagua tattoo kits and white henna tattoo kits (White Lace/Silver Lace and White Lace/Gold Lace kits), as well as lots of other adornment choices, we already partner with Body Adornment to make you gorgeous, give you options and facilitate your self expression.

We care about helping you look and feel gorgeous inside and out, and seeing the smiles on your faces after you’ve adorned yourself for festival season, parties and special events. In addition, we also care deeply about doing what it takes to foster a caring environment for our employees, and assisting our suppliers, who, like most people on the planet, can use a helping hand.

This year, we are funding the digging of a well for the family of Moroccan henna farmers we’ve worked with for years. Their desert region has suffered a crippling drought for a decade now, and without this well, they have no way to continue earning a living.

Every year, we pay for malaria medication for the 200 members of the Matsés people, who live deep in the Peruvian Amazon in a village where our jagua fruit is harvested, peeled, grated, and pressed to expel the juice that’s shipped to us here in the States.

Additionally, though you may not know this about us, my parter and husband Pascal Giacomini and I, for 25 years, have also owned a Haitian art gallery that operates out of our home in Hollywood. I am from Haiti. It is devastatingly poor there, but Haiti is also one of the biggest sources for black art in the world! We have helped to introduce and promote the works of Haitian artists—the desperately poor and those who are better off—for a long time. In fact, on Saturday, March 25th, Cal State Northridge is hosting an exhibition of Pascal’s Haiti-inspired photography, sculpture and documentary film, Out of Chaos, An Artist's Journey in Haiti*, about the thriving art scene in one slum in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. If you live in Los Angeles, you’re invited. We’d love to meet you, our gorgeous patrons!

    Best Henna For Hair Ever

    Best Henna For Hair Ever

Every once in a while, we stop to remember that, before anyone ever used henna for temporary body art in this country, henna’s main job was dyeing hair! And there’s a reason why using henna for hair is so popular.

Henna coats each hair shaft with a natural, semi-permanent protein called hennatannic acid. Heat causes the hennatannic acid to cling to the proteins found in the hair. Because henna coats and seals the hair shaft, it helps protect the hair from damaging effects of sun, salt, chlorine, wind and pollution in the environment. It can help miminize split ends and acts as "hair insurance," if you spend a lot of time in the sun, surf or wind. In addition to protecting the hair shaft, henna will tighten the hair cuticle and create a more solid surface which reflects light; the result is gleaming, lustrous hair.

Yeah! You can always tell when someone has used henna to dye their hair. The color is totally magical and lustrous like no other. That’s why we’ve been offering Light Mountain Natural Hair Color & Conditioner  for so many years. It is simply the best henna-based natural hair color and conditioner on the market.
