Learn About the Best Henna Tattoo Kit on the Market
Earth Henna temporary tattoo kits were developed with an eye toward the discriminating needs of modern women and men. Much thought and care went into creating a unique henna product that would retain all of the special properties of the plant while adding a few extras for our customers’ convenience.
Where Our Henna Comes From
Practiced for over 5,000 years, the act of painting the body with preparations made from the crushed leaves of the henna plant—whether it be in preparation for a special occasion or in celebration of a particular event—has always been done with the assumption that the act would engender good fortune, happy results, and good feelings.
You can’t make good henna tattoos without good raw materials. The North African country of Morocco is one of the most important regions in the world for the commercial production of this plant. Earth Henna has been buying freshly harvested hennafor our mehndi tattoo kits from the same Moroccan supplier since 1998. This is a trusted source, so you can be sure our henna powder is natural, unadulterated, and of the highest quality.
Mehndi: Body Painting with Henna
For thousands of years, mehndi—the art of henna painting on the body—has been practiced ritualistically and cosmetically in India, Africa, and the Middle East, where the henna plant is believed to bring love and good fortune, and to protect against evil. Mehndi is traditionally practiced for wedding ceremonies, during important rites of passage, and in times of joyous celebration. A paste made from the crushed leaves of the henna plant is applied to the skin; and when removed several hours later, it leaves beautiful markings on the skin that fade naturally over 1 to 3 weeks.
Henna Use in the Past
It is truly steeped in tradition. Besides being the key ingredient in henna kits, henna has also been used to dye the manes and hooves of horses, and to color wool, silk, and animal skins, as well as men's beards. Studies of mummies dating back to 1200 BC show that henna was used on the hair and nails of the pharaohs!
Henna Today
Until the art of mehndi became hot news in 1996, henna was mostly used in the United States as a hair dye. Widely recognized now as a wonderful way to dye the skin and to achieve the look of a tattoo (without the permanence!), traditional henna uses and application processes have gone contemporary. Although some will always prepare their own henna paste, henna kits of excellent quality, with foolproof instructions and convenient stencils, can be purchased directly from this website.

Frequently Asked Questions About Out Henna Tattoo Kits
Here are some answers to the most common inquiries from customers regarding our henna temporary tattoo products.
-

A. Designs last from 7–10 days.
-
Q. How long does the paste last?
A. Four weeks, once mixed, if refrigerated.
-
Q. Can you do your eyebrows with it?
A. Yes, but the stain is reddish brown.
-
Q. Can you dye your lips with it?
A. No.
Q. Can you apply it on a pregnant woman's belly?
A. Yes. It is completely safe.
Q. Can you dye your hair with it?
A. Yes. Just use water instead of the solution that comes in the kit.
Q. How do you take the design off?
A. The stain fades gradually as your skin exfoliates. There is no quick fix!
Q. Has it ever not faded away?
A. Never. Henna is a temporary skin dye. It always fades away.
Q. What’s in the Earth Henna kit paste solution?
- Water
- Benzyl alcohol — flower oil, balsams
- Citric acid — fruit
- Eucalyptus oil — tree
- Disodium EDTA — processed salt to prevent oxidation or discoloration
Q. What color will the tattoo be?
A. Dark reddish brown. Variations in color depend on your body temperature and skin type.
Q. Can you add anything to the henna to make it darker?
A. We hear about all kinds of homemade recipes, but nothing we can vouch for.
Q. What about black henna?
A. Black henna does not exist. The stuff on the market called “black henna” is a synthetic compound that contains industrial dyes (like PPD), inks, or chemicals—all of them potentially harmful to the skin. We strongly recommend that you stay away from so-called black henna mixtures.
FYI, the henna powder in our Earth Henna® Kits is completely natural and 100% safe. And if you want a temporary black tattoo, try our safe, all-natural Earth Jagua® Tattoo Kits!
Q. What’s the eucalyptus oil for?
A. The eucalyptus oil is for transferring stencils to skin. We also recommend swabbing the skin with eucalyptus oil before applying henna paste.
Q. How do you transfer the stencils?
A. Just follow these simple steps:
- Apply a liberal amount of eucalyptus oil to the skin.
- Cut off chosen design from stencil sheet.
- Place stencil, dark side down, onto skin and hold for 30 seconds.
- Peel off stencil.
- Trace over marking with henna paste.
Q. Are the stencils reusable?
A. Yes. They can be used four or five times each.
Q. Can you mix half of the powder and solution and leave the other half for later use, or do you have to use it all at once?
A. We strongly recommend you mix it all at once. Most people who try using half end up with a paste that is either too thick or too runny.
Q. How long does the paste take to dry?
A. 15–30 minutes, depending on size of design.
Q. How do I take the paste off?
A. Simply peel it off with your nails, or rub it off with your fingers or a towel.
